Buttrio Castle: from the Middle Ages to today

The origins of Buttrio Castle are truly ancient. According to some historical documents, the ancient castle was in fact built in the 11th century on the foundations of an earlier Roman lookout. In 1139 ownership of the castle then passed to Marquis Ulrico, who was charged with governing the fortification and defending the territory. During the 12th century, the castle was then purchased by the noble Buttrio family, local free feudal lords.

With the outbreak of war against the Patriarch of Gorizia in 1306, Buttrio Castle was razed to the ground. It took several years to rebuild the complex, which was further fortified. However, these precautions were not enough to save the castle. At the end of the 14th century it was again occupied by the Gorizians and later destroyed by the people of Udine, Cividale and Gemona. In 1415, the Lords of Buttrio thus officially abandoned the Castle, by then devastated and in ruins.

A good two centuries were to pass before the complex was purchased and rebuilt. The de Portis family members transformed the ruins of Buttrio Castle into a prestigious residence. The complex was soon transformed into a place of meeting and cultural exchange, becoming an elegant villa. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the structure continued to grow and expand. Two tall towers and several minor Art Nouveau buildings were erected.

The de Portis family then put the castle up for sale and it passed to the Morpurgo's. Finally, in 1994, Buttrio Castle was purchased by Marco Felluga, whose sons still run the castle today. Buttrio Castle was thus transformed into the precious location that we know so well and in which to organise events and weddings.

Buttrio Castle: the structure of the location

The magnificent Buttrio Castle is an imposing structure immersed in Friuli's green hills and vineyards. It stands on Pampinutta hill, from which it is even possible to see the Adriatic Sea. Embraced by a beautiful centuries-old park, the castle is actually an 18th-century villa. After being razed to the ground only a few buildings from the medieval period are still visible today. The result is an unusual but refined mix of elements from different periods, infusing the location with character and uniqueness.

Past the 16th-century walls, visitors walk along tree-lined avenues until they reach the buildings that make up the castle. In addition to the central villa, there are a number of smaller buildings, such as the cottages, stables and an old church. These overlook the castle's inner courtyard, built in the 14th-century style. These are unique rooms, distinguished by their medieval-era lines. Here are halls with wooden ceilings and stone walls, suitable for organising events and tastings.

Moving inside the main building, however, the atmosphere changes completely. The rustic lines are replaced by the more elegant and clean lines of the Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. In fact, the central villa houses several salons characterised by pastel-coloured walls, rich in stuccoes and paintings. The most significant example is certainly the elegant Sala Rosa, in which intimate and refined dinners are served.

Finally, within the complex you will find a luxurious hotel, equipped with suites and private flats. Buttrio Castle is truly a location full of possibilities and services waiting to be discovered. It will be the perfect choice for your most important day and will provide you with unforgettable moments.

In addition to being a wedding photographer, I am a husband (lucky!) and a dad (super lucky!).

I love happy tail wags and purring in the evening twilight, which is why we also have two beautiful furries in our family, Octavia and Nova.
I love the smell of the woods where everything is so wild, where you can reconnect deeply with nature. In the same way, I love the only means that allows you to stay firmly connected to the world around you, the motorbike.

My wife Giulia and I travelled across Europe to the North Cape, where we left a piece of our hearts.
