Villa Caprera: the history
Villa Caprera is a historic residence dating back to the late 18th century. It stands in Castello di Godego, in the province of Treviso, in the gentle Venetian countryside. According to some old local documents, the structure has belonged to the noblewoman Foscarini since 1778.
During the 19th century, the property passed to a general of Garibaldi's army. He chose the name "Villa Caprera" for the complex, in memory of the place where Giuseppe Garibaldi spent the last years of his life. The property was then purchased in the 20th century by the Serena family and was transformed into a splendid country villa.
During the Second World War, Villa Caprera was occupied by the German army, who used it as a strategic base. Here the troops could control the entire area and store supplies in the large cellars. With the conclusion of the conflict, the Villa began its rebirth process. Numerous exclusive parties and events were organized and attended by distinguished European nobility members, including Queen Elizabeth.
In 1947 Silvia Serena married Marquis Vincenzo D'Ayala Valve, a knight of the Order of Malta. Villa Caprera became the home of this new family until 1995, when the marquis died. The remaining heirs abandoned the house, which soon began to decay.
With the purchase by Fabrizio and Gloria Santi, Villa Caprera has now returned to its former glory. Thanks to them, both the beautiful park and the complex's buildings have been completely restored. For about twenty years now, Villa Caprera has been open for visits and private events, becoming a social and cultural centre.
