Villa Giustinian Molon: the history
Villa Giustinian Molon is a historic mansion dating back to the 17th century, located in Campo di Pietra, in the province of Treviso. The mansion was built in 1652 at the behest of the Giustinian family of Calle delle Acque, patricians of Venetian origin. Like many noble families of the time, in fact, the Giustinian commissioned the estate both to manage the agricultural production of their land and to spend their vacations there.
Ownership of the complex remained in the hands of the Giustinian family until 1792, when it passed to the Querinis. The latter further expanded Villa Giustinian Molon, reclaiming some uncultivated land and engaging in silkworm breeding. Within a few decades, the Querini family grew enormously wealthy, becoming one of the largest silk producers in Europe. The high quality of the product even earned a medal for Count Giovanni Querini, who attended the first World Expo in London in 1851 with his yarns.
Villa Giustinian Molon remained the property of the Querini family until 1869, when Giovanni, the last member of the family, died. As per his will, the estate and all the Count's possessions were left to the Pia Querini Stampalia Foundation. After a few years, Villa Giustinian Molon was put up for sale to finance the Foundation's projects. Thus it was that in 1892 the mansion was purchased by the Carretta family of Santa Maria di Campagna.
However, with the outbreak of World War I, due to its strategic location on the Piave River, Villa Giustinian Molon was occupied and bombed. The complex was finally purchased in 1994 by the Molon Traverso Family. The latter began extensive restoration work, returning Villa Giustinian Molon to its 18th-century splendor. Since 1996 the mansion has been reopened to the public, winning in 2015 the "Best Villa Veneta 2015" award.
