Villa Mosconi Bertani: the history

The elegant Villa Mosconi Bertani is a historic residence that was created as an extension of a winery dating back to the 16th century. It is situated in Negrar, in the beautiful Valpolicella, a short distance from Verona. The majestic structure is immersed in the rich vineyards of the area, famous for Amarone Classico della Valpolicella production. Construction of the current Villa Mosconi Bertani began in the 18th century by the Fattori family, who were interested in expanding the existing winery.

The unfinished building was sold to the Mosconi family in 1769. The Mosconi family completed the construction, creating an enormous romantic park in the English style and expanding the wine cellar further. In a short time, the Villa became one of the largest wineries in northern Italy. Also during this period, the Villa was transformed into a cultural centre. Under the Mosconi family, in fact, the residence was opened to the leading literary figures of the time, including the poet Ippolito Pindemonte. The literary salon of Villa Mosconi Bertani gained great recognition, becoming the centre of the Italian Romantic movement.

In the first half of the twentieth century, the house began a slow decline, resulting in years of neglect and vandalism. Fortunately, in 1953, the Bertani family purchased the Villa, who began a long and careful restoration. Over the years, thanks to the family's commitment, the structure returned to its former glory. Since 2012 the owner of the Villa is Gaetano Bertani, who continues the successful wine production of the renowned Cantina. Villa Mosconi Bertani and the adjoining areas are now open for events and guided tours.

Villa Mosconi Bertani: the structure of the location

Villa Mosconi Bertani was created as an extension of an earlier 16th-century complex, a wine cellar still in operation today. The neoclassical structure is composed of a summer residence, the monumental wine cellar and an immense brolo dedicated to viticulture. The large complex is in fact surrounded by the rich vineyards of the area, which embrace the English-style park of the Villa. Here centuries-old trees mingle with a rich variety of exotic plants, framing a beautiful pond. The elegant Kaffeehaus and the Secret Garden overlook the pond, which has a lovely bridge.

Passing through the large park, one then reaches the Villa's main building. It is a three-storey building with a sumptuous façade on which five statues of mythological divinities stand out. The interiors are splendid: the great salons are rich in frescoes and sculptures, in a state of perfect preservation. There are 5 rooms, each with its own special features.

  • The main hall, the Salone delle Muse, is frescoed with allegorical motifs inspired by the muses of the arts and sciences.
  • The Sala delle Fonti is more elegant and intimate, with a fireplace.
  • The Sala del Consiglio Acinatico, furnished with an imperial table, chairs and 19th-century furniture.
  • The Sala degli Specchi, decorated with period stucco and mirrors and with direct access to the Park.
  • The Sala della Pieve, decorated with a private collection of paintings by the contemporary painter Ciferri.

In addition to these areas, there is the old kitchen, the wine cellar and the splendid Church of San Gaetano. With its bell tower, the latter is available for your Protestant religious rites. Villa Mosconi Bertani is an evocative and grandiose location, which will dazzle you with its views of infinite beauty.
