Masseria Montalbano: the history
The beautiful Masseria Montalbano is located between Fasano and Ostuni, in Montalbano Vecchio. It is an ancient 16th-century fortified village, surrounded by a wood of centuries-old olive trees. During the Renaissance, the masseria became one of the richest and most articulated agricultural complexes in the Brindisi area.
During the 17th century, the farm-village experienced its period of maximum splendour. In fact, in the 17th century, Montalbano Vecchio grew to over 300 inhabitants. These occupied small buildings arranged in rows, not far from the main house.
In the first half of the 17th century, Masseria Montalbano was later acquired by Giangirolamo II Acquaviva d'Aragona, Count of Conversano. The farm was passed on by inheritance to Julius II, the Count's successor, who further contributed to the expansion of the structure. In particular, Julius II rebuilt the ancient Church of Montalbano, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. It is still possible to admire the family coat of arms of the Acquaviva family on the chapel's main altar.
In the early 19th century, the inhabitants of Montalbano Vecchio decided to leave the farmhouse, which had become overcrowded. During the 20th century, in an attempt to recover the structure, a meticulous restoration was undertaken. The famous Belgian designer Jos Van Dyck also took part in the restoration, designing and furnishing all the accommodation on the farm.
Masseria Montalbano currently houses an accommodation facility and is open for exclusive receptions. It also includes a renowned restaurant, known for its traditional and genuine cuisine.
