Villa Cornaro: the history

Villa Cornaro is a historic residence built in the 16th century in Santo Stefano di Zimella, a Veronese municipality located at the foot of the Lessinia Natural Park. According to official archives, the mansion belonged as early as 1661 to members of the Cornaro family, nobles of Venetian origin. Alvise and Giacomo Cornaro, in fact, had used the complex as a summer and representative residence from which to manage their affairs.

About a century later, in 1740, Villa Cornaro was then purchased by the Grimani family. These were noble patricians from an ancient Venetian lineage, who transformed the mansion into a true social hub. In fact, the Grimaldis hosted many famous people of the time, including the playwright Carlo Goldoni. Also in those years, the structure was further expanded with the addition of two symmetrical side bodies.

With the marriage of Loredana Grimani in 1787, Villa Cornaro passed to the Morosini family, one of the most influential families of the Serenissima. The Morosinis, in fact, boasted as many as four doges and two queens among their members. From the union between Loredana and Francesco Morosini was born Elisabetta, who married Count Antonio Gatterburg in Vienna, the future owner of the mansion adjacent to Villa Cornaro.

With the death of the family's last heir, Loredana Morosini Gatterburg, the family's immense estate was split up. Thus it was that Villa Cornaro passed to the Congregazione di Carità di Venezia, which retained ownership until 1925. The mansion was then purchased by Basilio Carpenedo for 50,000 liras. Finally, since 2002, ownership of Villa Cornaro has passed to the company S.Stefano Costruzioni srl.
